How do I track whether AI is citing my website?

You track AI citations by running a fixed set of customer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews on a schedule, then recording whether your business is named and which pages get quoted. This produces a citation rate, which moves independently of website traffic and cannot be read from analytics.

Updated

Why does ai citation tracking matter for a contractor?

Analytics cannot show this, because most AI citations never produce a click. A business can be cited hundreds of times and see a handful of sessions. The only reliable method is asking the assistants directly, using identical questions every time so month-over-month comparison means something.

What does it cost to ignore it?

Without a fixed baseline you cannot tell whether AI visibility work is succeeding, which usually means it gets cancelled during the months before it compounds.

Common questions

Why not just count citations?

Because a raw citation count scales with how many questions you track — add more questions and the number rises without anything improving. Citation rate, the share of answers naming you, and share of voice against named competitors are the metrics that cannot be inflated that way.

How often should AI visibility be measured?

Monthly is right for reporting, weekly for collection. The metric moves over months, not days, so daily checks burn budget without adding signal. The rule that matters more: never change the question set mid-engagement, because changing the questions destroys the comparison you are paying for.
