What does the scan actually check?

Six areas, ordered by how much damage each one does when it goes wrong. The first two are where nearly every small business is exposed, and both are fixable this week without buying anything.

1. Breached credentials on your domain

Searches known breach data for every address at your domain — not just one inbox you can verify.

This is the finding that stops people. Old passwords from a breached vendor get reused on your email, your CRM, your bank. You cannot rotate a password you do not know is public.

2. Email spoofing (SPF, DKIM, DMARC)

Checks whether your domain publishes the three DNS records that stop someone sending email as you.

Without DMARC, anyone can email your customer list from a lookalike of your address asking to change deposit instructions. It is the single most common way a contractor gets a customer defrauded in their name.

3. SSL certificate and security headers

Certificate validity and expiry, plus the HTTP headers your site sends browsers.

An expired certificate throws a full-page browser warning. Most visitors read that as "this company is not real" and leave — so it costs you leads before it ever costs you data.

4. Exposed logins and admin panels

Looks for login pages, admin panels, and remote-access portals reachable from the open internet.

Anything reachable gets found by automated scanners within hours, not months. Exposed portals are how most small businesses actually get hit — nobody targeted them, a bot just found an open door.

5. Subdomains and safe-browsing status

Maps subdomains attached to your domain and checks whether Google flags any of them as unsafe.

The forgotten staging site or old booking subdomain is usually the weak one. And if Google marks any of it unsafe, Chrome shows an interstitial to your customers.

6. Technology stack and DNS health

Identifies the software running your site and checks your DNS configuration.

Outdated, publicly identifiable software tells an attacker which known exploit to try first. It also tells you what your web guy has quietly stopped updating.

Why should a contractor care about a dark web scan?

Because the money moves by email. A homeowner mid-remodel gets a message from what looks like your address, with your logo, saying the deposit account changed. They pay it. The fraud is against them, but the phone call, the reputation damage, and the review all land on you — and if your domain has no DMARC record, you made it possible.

The same goes for credentials. One breached password from an old supplier portal, reused on your email, hands someone your entire customer list and every quote you have ever sent. None of this requires anyone to have singled out your company. Automated scanners find open doors; the list gets worked later.

What is a dark web scan for business?

A dark web scan for business searches known data-breach collections for credentials tied to your company domain — for example anyone@yourcompany.com — and reports which addresses appear in those breaches. Consumer versions check one email address you own. A business scan checks the whole domain, so it catches the former employee, the shared office@ inbox, and the accounts nobody remembers creating.

Is this scan actually free, and do I need to enter an email?

It is free and there is no signup. The only required field is your domain. Business email and industry are optional — email is only used to send you a copy of the report, so leave it blank if you just want to see results on screen.

Is it legal to scan my own domain like this?

Yes. Everything here is passive reconnaissance against publicly available information: DNS records, published certificates, HTTP response headers, Google Safe Browsing status, and breach data already circulating in public. Nothing logs in, nothing tests a password, and nothing touches a system you do not own. Only run it on a domain you control.

My business is a contractor, not a bank. Why would anyone target us?

Mostly nobody targets you specifically — that is the point. Attacks on small businesses are automated: bots sweep the internet for exposed logins, expired certificates, and domains with no DMARC record, then work the list. Contractors are attractive because deposits move by email and a spoofed invoice looks perfectly normal to a homeowner mid-project.

What do I do first if the scan finds something?

Work in this order. One: force a password reset on every breached address and turn on two-factor authentication for email and banking. Two: publish SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records so nobody can send mail as your domain. Three: put exposed admin panels behind a login restriction or VPN. Four: renew or fix any certificate warning. The first two cover most of the real-world risk and neither costs money.
