Contractor Tycoon: can you make the phone ring?

Ryan Goering, BaaDigi·Updated

Contractor Tycoon is a free browser game that teaches contractors how to market their own business. You start with one truck and a phone that never rings, then learn 15 real skills across two stages: Stage 1 (about 15 minutes) covers Google Business Profile, reviews, your website, local SEO, Google Ads, Local Services Ads, AI search, answer-first content and calling leads back fast. Stage 2 turns those calls into a predictable pipeline: Google posts, proof, lead-source profit, an after-hours answering system, directory cleanup and getting mentioned. Pick your trade, make choices, and watch your calls grow. No signup, no email, no sales pitch.

CONTRACTOR TYCOON

You. One truck. A phone that never rings.

Pick your trade, name your company, and learn the marketing that makes the phone ring. Stage 1 takes about 15 minutes; Stage 2 unlocks when you beat it. The money in this game is fake. The lessons are real.

What kind of contractor are you?

We keep the company name and city/zip you type so we can see who's playing and show top scores on the leaderboard. No email, no signup, no follow-up.

Game money and call counts are made up for fun. The lessons are real. Made by BaaDigi.

What does Contractor Tycoon teach?

Fifteen lessons across two stages, one per in-game week. Each is a 30-second mini-game, then a quick quiz, then a “do this for real” card with a link to how we do it. Every wrong answer costs game money and explains why it went wrong; every lesson ends with a “do this for real” card you can use on your business the same day.

  1. Google Business Profile: why the primary category matters more than almost anything else for showing up in Maps.
  2. Reviews: how to get more of them the legit way, and how to answer a bad one without making it worse.
  3. Website basics: what belongs at the top of the page and why every service needs its own page.
  4. Local SEO: own your zip code first, then branch out; real town pages; matching name, address and phone everywhere; and the business-name trick that gets profiles suspended.
  5. Google Ads: negative keywords, and tracking calls instead of admiring clicks.
  6. Local Services Ads: pay-per-lead ads, the Google Verified badge, and disputing junk leads.
  7. AI search: what makes ChatGPT and other assistants quote one contractor over another.
  8. Speed-to-lead: why the first company to call back usually gets the job.
  9. Content that answers: how to write a service page answer-first: a real price range up top, then proof, then FAQs.
  10. Stage 2: Google posts: the weekly posting habit, and why Google archives posts after six months.
  11. Stage 2: proof: turning one finished job into a case study, a Google post and a social post, with no made-up quotes.
  12. Stage 2: lead-source profit: judging every lead source by the money it leaves, not by cost per lead.
  13. Stage 2: never miss a call: after-hours answering systems and instant form replies.
  14. Stage 2: directory cleanup: matching name, address and phone on every listing, and merging duplicate profiles.
  15. Stage 2: getting mentioned: earning real mentions from local news, associations and roundups, and why you never buy links.

Why is it a game and not a guide?

Because most contractors learn marketing the expensive way: a year-long contract, a keyword-stuffed business name, an ad account that spent everything on “free.” Here you make those mistakes with fake money. When you're done, you get a printable checklist and you'll know what good work looks like, whether you do it yourself or hire someone. Want to go deeper on a topic? Contractor Tycoon FAQs

What is Contractor Tycoon?

Contractor Tycoon is a free browser game where you run a one-truck contracting business and learn marketing by playing. Each week you pick a marketing move, play a 30-second mini-game, answer a quick quiz, and see how it changes your calls and jobs. Stage 1 (nine lessons) takes about 15 minutes; Stage 2 (six more) turns those calls into a predictable pipeline.

Which trades can I play as?

Roofer, HVAC tech, plumber, electrician, painter, landscaper, remodeler and pest control. The lessons are the same core marketing basics for every trade; the jokes, examples and busy seasons change with the trade you pick.

Are the numbers in the game real?

No. The cash, calls and jobs are game math, made up so the game is fun and fair. The lessons are real: each "do this for real" card is based on a published source, such as the FTC rule on fake reviews, Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors survey and Harvard Business Review research on lead response time.

Do I need to sign up or give an email?

No. There is no signup, no email gate and no sales pitch. Your progress saves in your own browser so a refresh does not wipe your game. The only things we keep are the company name and city or zip you type at the start.

Why does the game ask for my city or zip code?

It is optional. The game uses it to make the lessons local: Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, so the game teaches you to own your own zip code on your Google Business Profile first, then expand one zip at a time before you chase the whole city. We do keep the company name and city or zip you type, so we can see who is playing; we never ask for an email and never follow up.

Are the marketing companies in the game real?

No. Every agency in the game is a made-up parody of a type most contractors have met, like the lead seller who sells the same lead to five companies or the guy who guarantees a #1 ranking. None of them are based on a real company.
