Is Wix Good for a Contractor Website?

Wix is good for a contractor website if you want fast pages with no upkeep and accept that you are renting, not owning. Plans run $17, $29, $39 and $159 a month billed yearly, and taking payments or online bookings starts at the $29 Core plan[1][2]. You cannot move a Wix site to another host: Wix says "your site must run on Wix’s servers," so leaving means rebuilding[3]. For AI search, Wix is open by default: its auto-generated robots.txt allows all bots, and every site gets an automatic llms.txt file[4][5]. Speed is a strength: 81.2% of Wix sites pass Core Web Vitals on mobile, against 53.0% across the web[6][7]. Wix runs 6.5% of the contractor sites AI engines recommended in our study[8]. The biggest warning: Wix’s terms give it a licence to use your site content to train its AI models[9].

What does a Wix website cost?

Wix’s displayed prices are for yearly plans paid in full up front, before tax[1]. Prices may differ by location[11]. Each plan covers one site only[11]. There is no free trial of paid plans, but there is a 14-day money-back guarantee on the first upgrade[11][1].

Wix does not show monthly-billing prices on its default plans page. The monthly figures above come from WebsiteBuilderExpert’s review, updated September 15, 2026[10]. Enterprise is custom-priced[10].

  • Domain: most yearly plans include a voucher for one free year of a new domain, redeemable within 60 days; monthly plans do not include it[1][2]. The voucher excludes domain privacy[2]. After year one, a .com renews at $21.35 a year at Wix[12].
  • Custom domain: connecting any domain, bought from Wix or elsewhere, needs a paid plan[3].
  • Email: Wix resells Google Workspace, on plans priced at $7, $14 and $22 per user per month[13].
  • Payment fees: Wix Payments in the US charges 2.9% + $0.30 per card transaction, 3.7% + $0.30 for Amex[14]. We found no separate Wix platform fee on top.

Two renewal traps. Anything bought at a discount, including a discounted first upgrade, renews at the standard rate. And yearly and multi-year plans are charged up to three weeks before they expire, so cancel well ahead[2].

If you turn off auto-renew inside the first 14 days, Wix cancels the plan immediately. Wait until the money-back window has passed[15].

Do you own your Wix site if you leave?

You own your content, but you cannot take the website with you. Wix is software you rent: "Since Wix is a SaaS solution, your site must run on Wix’s servers"[3]. The design and pages cannot be exported to another host.

  • Blog posts: cannot be exported to other platforms; it is an open feature request[16].
  • Contacts: export to a CSV file, up to 50,000 at a time[17].
  • CMS collections, such as the data behind city pages: export to CSV[18].
  • Domain: a domain bought from Wix can be transferred to another registrar[19].

The terms of use, last revised July 9, 2026, say Wix "does not claim ownership rights on your User Content"[9]. The same section grants Wix a worldwide, transferable, sub-licensable licence to use that content, including "to train our software tools (e.g. artificial intelligence and machine learning models)"[9]. The terms also let Wix decide who owns an account or site in a dispute, "as it chooses"[9].

Before you build on Wix, register your domain yourself and keep a copy of your service-page text, photos and blog posts outside Wix. If you leave, you will rebuild the site, and the blog will not come with you.

Can AI search engines read a Wix site?

Yes, and Wix leans hard in that direction. By default, a Wix site’s robots.txt lets all bots reach all pages[4]. We found no platform switch to block AI crawlers; the auto-generated robots.txt on live Wix sites names no AI crawler, so GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot are allowed[20].

  • llms.txt: Wix generates and maintains one automatically; you can edit it in the dashboard or switch it off[5]. It is now available on all sites[21].
  • Site MCP server: every Wix site has a built-in MCP server that any AI agent can connect to, exposing business details, services and booking[22].
  • Blocking: you can edit robots.txt in the Robots.txt Editor[4]. Wix’s own sample block list starts with CCBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User and BingAI; it does not mention ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended or OAI-SearchBot[23].
  • Wix warns that blocking AI crawlers may limit NLWeb, its feature for AI agents that read your structured content[23].
  • There is no firewall-level bot control; a Wix staff reply in the community forum pointed a site owner to robots.txt instead[24].

Robots.txt only asks outside crawlers to stay away. It does not change the licence you grant Wix itself in the terms of use, which covers training Wix’s own AI models[9].

How fast are Wix websites?

Faster than most. In August 2026, 81.2% of Wix sites passed all three Core Web Vitals on mobile and 86.8% on desktop[6]. Across the whole web the figures were 53.0% and 60.2%[7]. Wix sites passed the mobile loading measure, largest contentful paint, 85.0% of the time[6].

The HTTP Archive’s Web Almanac explains why: platforms that control their own hosting and code tend to deliver more consistent Core Web Vitals, especially on mobile, than self-hosted systems where every site owner adds their own themes and plugins[25].

How many AI-recommended contractors use Wix?

In our study of 511 local contractor websites named by ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews, 6.5% ran on Wix (95% confidence interval 4.6–8.9%)[8]. That puts Wix level with Duda at 6.8% and far behind WordPress at 49.3%[8].

For context, W3Techs counts Wix on 4.2% of all websites, a 6.2% share of sites whose content management system it can identify[26].

Correlation only. Wix’s 6.5% share of AI-recommended contractors is close to its 6.2% share of sites with an identifiable CMS, and our study cannot show that Wix, or any platform, helps or hurts a contractor’s chance of being recommended.

What SEO controls does Wix give you?

  • Titles, meta descriptions and URL slugs: editable per page[27].
  • Canonical tags: created automatically, editable per page[27].
  • 301 redirects: through the URL Redirect Manager, up to 5,000 per site, and only with a custom domain, which means a paid plan[28].
  • Schema (JSON-LD): custom markup per page, up to 7,000 characters each. Wix Customer Care will not help with markup, and AI-generated structured data works only on blog posts[29].
  • XML sitemap: generated and updated automatically[30].
  • Custom code: needs a published site with a connected domain[31].

Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and Meta and TikTok pixels do not work through Wix custom code; they must go through Wix’s marketing integrations[31]. If your ad agency relies on a custom tag setup to track which ads produce calls and forms, confirm it works on Wix first.

What local business features does Wix have?

  • Booking: Wix scheduling and services is listed on Core, Business and Business Elite, not Light[1].
  • Forms: lead-capture forms are capped by plan at 4 (Light), 10 (Core), 25 (Business) and 75 (Business Elite)[1].
  • Click-to-call: a phone number typed into a text box becomes clickable automatically on mobile[32].
  • LocalBusiness schema: added automatically to the homepage only, from your business info. City and service pages need hand-written JSON-LD[33].
  • Multiple locations or service areas: CMS dynamic pages create one URL per collection item from a single template[34].
  • Google reviews: shown through third-party apps from the Wix App Market, such as Elfsight[35].

The Light plan is cheapest, but it lists no booking and only four forms. Most contractors who want online booking or deposits need Core or higher.

What changed at Wix in 2025–2026?

  • June 2025: Wix bought Base44, an AI app builder, for about $80 million plus earn-outs through 2029[36].
  • July 2025: Wix launched AI Visibility Overview, which tracks mentions and citations in AI answers[37]. It now covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity[38].
  • January 2026: Wix launched Wix Harmony, its new AI website builder[39]. It has no separate price and is included in every plan, including the free one[40].
  • llms.txt moved from some premium eCommerce sites in July 2025 to all sites[37][21].
  • The Business plan rose from $36 to $39 a month billed yearly: an archived copy of the plans page from June 2, 2025 shows $36[41][1]. We could not confirm the exact date of the change.
  • The terms of use were last revised July 9, 2026[9].

What do Wix customers complain about?

Wix holds a TrustScore of 3.5 out of 5 from 29,031 Trustpilot reviews[42]. Trustpilot’s summary of recent reviews flags unexpected charges, early subscription renewals and unclear renewal policies as the most negative theme, followed by difficulty reaching support for technical problems[42]. G2 and Capterra were not checked for this page.

Should a contractor use Wix?

  • Likely a fit: a small contractor who needs a fast, good-looking site this month, has nobody to maintain WordPress, and is fine staying on Wix for the long run. Pick Core or higher if you want bookings or payments.
  • Likely not: you plan to switch agencies or platforms later, want to own the site outright, or object to your content being used to train Wix’s AI. Leaving Wix means a rebuild, and the blog stays behind.
  • Either way: buy your domain yourself, keep copies of your content, budget at the renewal price, and check that your ad tracking works through Wix’s integrations before you spend on ads.

Can I move my Wix website to another host?
No. Wix says sites must run on its own servers, so the design and pages cannot be exported. You can export contacts and CMS collections to CSV and transfer a domain bought from Wix, but blog posts cannot be exported, so leaving means rebuilding the site.
Does Wix use my website content to train AI?
Wix’s terms of use, revised July 9, 2026, say you keep ownership of your content but grant Wix a worldwide, sub-licensable licence to use it, including to train its artificial intelligence and machine learning models. Editing robots.txt does not change that licence.
Does Wix block AI crawlers like ChatGPT?
No. A Wix site’s default robots.txt allows all bots, and Wix automatically creates an llms.txt file for AI systems. You can block AI crawlers by editing robots.txt in the dashboard, but there is no one-click switch or firewall option.
Are Wix websites fast?
On average, yes. In August 2026, 81.2% of Wix sites passed all Core Web Vitals on mobile and 86.8% on desktop, well above the web-wide rates of 53.0% and 60.2%.
