Is GoDaddy Website Builder Good for a Contractor Website?

GoDaddy Website Builder is cheap to start and hard to price over time. In 2026 GoDaddy replaced its old drag-and-drop builder for new buyers with Airo AI Builder, which starts at $9.99 a month billed annually, or $19.99 billed monthly[1][2]. The plan page prints first-year prices only; it shows no renewal rate[1]. On ownership, Airo lets paid plans download the whole site as a ZIP of code, while the older Websites + Marketing terms say the website itself belongs to GoDaddy and your licence ends when you cancel[3][4]. GoDaddy sites pass Core Web Vitals far more often than the average website[5][6]. AI-crawler control is unclear: GoDaddy documents no AI-bot setting for either builder[7]. The main warning: the free plan cannot publish a site or connect your own domain, so budget for a paid plan from day one[8][9].

Which GoDaddy Website Builder are you actually buying?

Two different products share the name. New buyers on godaddy.com/websites/website-builder now get Airo AI Builder, a prompt-driven builder that writes the site’s code for you and meters use in AI credits[1]. It replaced the drag-and-drop Websites + Marketing plans (Basic, Premium, Commerce) on that page, which were still listed there in February 2026[10]. GoDaddy’s CFO said in September 2026 that Airo launched at the end of the first quarter and that existing customers are switching to it when their products come up for renewal[2].

Before you read further, check which one you have. If your site was built before spring 2026, it is probably on Websites + Marketing, and the ownership and AI-crawler answers below are different for you.

What does GoDaddy Website Builder cost?

Paying monthly costs about double the annual rate[1]. GoDaddy pitches Professional at local businesses that need bookings and payments, but the plan page lists online booking, payments and deposits on Starter too[1].

Renewal: not published. The Airo plan boxes say only "billed annually" and carry no renewal rate and no "first term" label[1]. The older builder page, archived February 1, 2026, did say its intro prices were for the first term only, that products renew automatically and that renewal pricing could change[10].

  • AI credits: monthly credits expire at the end of each billing cycle and do not roll over[1]. Extra packs cost $24.99 for 250 credits, valid one year. Manual text and image edits do not use credits[8]. Automations do use credits every time they run[11].
  • Domain: one free domain with a new annual Airo plan, first year only, then it renews at current prices[1]. A standalone .com is $4.99 for the first year for new customers with a promo code; after that, domains renew at the "then-current renewal rate," which the page does not print[12].
  • Email: Microsoft 365 mailboxes are a separate purchase, from $1.99 per mailbox per month for the first year against a displayed $8.99 reference price[13]. Inside Airo, turning on email needs an email credit and a domain you own[14].
  • Transaction fees: the Airo plan page lists payment processing but no fee percentage[1]. The old Commerce plan charged 2.7% + 30¢ per card transaction[10].

The free plan is a sandbox. Publishing needs an active paid plan[8], connecting a custom domain needs a paid plan[9], a site left on its default airoapp.ai address is excluded from search results[15], and downloading your code needs a paid plan[16]. One GoDaddy features page describes the product more loosely, but the help articles are the stricter and more specific source[17].

Get the year-two price in writing before you prepay. GoDaddy’s plan page prints only the first-term price for every Airo plan, and its domain and email offers also switch to renewal rates it does not print.

Do you own your GoDaddy website if you leave?

It depends on which builder you are on, and the difference is large.

  • Airo AI Builder: yes, with a paid plan. You can download the full project as a ZIP of code and host it elsewhere[3]. GoDaddy says the export is React, TypeScript and Tailwind code you can hand to a developer, and calls it "no lock-in"[17]. Downloading requires a paid plan[16]. GoDaddy’s AI Terms of Use say you own the output the AI produces[18].
  • Websites + Marketing (older builder): no. GoDaddy’s Website Services Agreement says: "Except for User Content, the websites and ShowinBio pages created using Website Services belong to GoDaddy"[4]. You get a licence to the website for as long as you subscribe, and cancelling for any reason ends it[4]. GoDaddy does not claim your own content, meaning your text and photos[4].
  • No site export found in GoDaddy’s help for the older builder: its backups cover only sections, text and settings, not blogs, products, appointments or images, and they restore inside GoDaddy[19]. There is no file manager[20]. Store products export to CSV[21].
  • Domain: you can transfer a domain to another registrar from your Domain Portfolio. A 60-day lock can apply after a new registration, a transfer or a contact change if the registrant opted in[22].

One gap in GoDaddy’s paperwork: the Website Services Agreement lists the older products but not Airo, and we found no Airo-specific website agreement. The AI Terms of Use cover the AI output[4][18].

On the older builder, leaving means rebuilding. Before you cancel, copy your text, download your photos and export any store products, because the website itself stays with GoDaddy.

Can AI search engines read a GoDaddy website?

Airo sites are built to be read. They render on the server so crawlers see real content, and every published site gets an automatic sitemap.xml and robots.txt[23]. GoDaddy says each site also gets an auto-generated llms.txt file[15]. Whether you can control which AI bots get in is less clear.

  • Airo robots.txt: the file is part of the generated code, so it differs from site to site. One Airo site checked for this guide allowed GPTBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, CCBot and other AI crawlers by name[24]; another carried a plain rule for all bots[25]. GoDaddy has no help article on editing it, and we cannot tell whether the AI-bot list came from GoDaddy’s default or the owner’s prompt.
  • Websites + Marketing robots.txt: a fixed two-line platform file with no documented way to edit it. Three sites on the older builder served the identical file[26].
  • llms.txt on the older builder is inconsistent: one of six contractor sites checked served one, the other five returned nothing[27].
  • AI-bot toggles: none documented for either builder[7].

The Cloudflare deal does not settle it. On April 7, 2026, GoDaddy and Cloudflare announced that GoDaddy would integrate Cloudflare’s AI Crawl Control, which lets a site allow, block or charge AI crawlers, into its "website hosting platform"[7][28]. The announcement did not say whether that covers the website builder or only GoDaddy’s other hosting products, or what it costs, and GoDaddy’s help pages show no such setting in either builder[7].

Ask GoDaddy support directly whether AI Crawl Control is available on your builder plan, and what your robots.txt allows today. The public pages do not answer either question.

How fast are GoDaddy websites?

In August 2026, 83.8% of GoDaddy Website Builder origins passed all three Core Web Vitals on mobile and 80.5% on desktop, according to the HTTP Archive Core Web Vitals Technology Report[5]. Across the whole web the same report shows 53.0% passing on mobile and 60.2% on desktop[6].

Read those numbers with care. The desktop figure rests on 4,231 origins and the mobile figure on 15,364, and the mobile sample shrank from 21,114 in July, when the pass rate was 82.2%[5]. The report does not break out Airo sites, so we cannot tell how many of the measured sites run on the new builder rather than the old one.

The HTTP Archive Web Almanac authors add that vertically integrated platforms tend to deliver more consistent Core Web Vitals than self-hosted systems, whose results vary with themes and plugins[29].

What SEO controls does GoDaddy give you?

  • Titles and meta descriptions: Airo sets them automatically, and you can ask it to "optimize my site for SEO" to review them page by page, or edit the code[30][23]. The older builder’s SEO wizard handles up to 5 pages; more go through SEO Settings[31].
  • Structured data: Airo adds business name, type, location, hours and contact details as structured data automatically[32]. An older-builder contractor site checked for this guide output LocalBusiness JSON-LD[33].
  • 301 redirects: GoDaddy’s US help documents no page-by-page redirect tool for either builder. Domain-level 301 forwarding exists, but it moves a whole domain, not individual pages[34]. That matters if you are moving an old site with ranking pages.
  • Search submission: on a custom domain, Airo submits your site to Bing, Yandex and Naver automatically; Google Search Console is connected on request[15].
  • Custom code: Airo lets you view and edit the generated code[1]. The older builder has an HTML section for embeds[35].
  • Canonical tags: not documented for either builder.

Does GoDaddy have the local business features contractors need?

  • Booking: Airo appointments cover schedules, staff, payments and automatic confirmation emails[36], with Google, Outlook and iCloud calendar sync[23]. Custom questions on booking forms arrived in August 2026[14]. On the older builder, online booking was a Premium-and-up feature[10].
  • Forms: Airo contact forms send submissions to an email address you choose[37], and paid plans include one inbox for chats and form messages[1].
  • Click-to-call: no dedicated feature is documented. Older-builder contractor sites checked render phone numbers as tap-to-call links[33]; on Airo it depends on what the AI generates.
  • Reviews: the older builder’s reviews section shows up to 9 reviews[38]. Airo documents no reviews widget; its plan page mentions managing reviews from one dashboard[1].
  • Business listings: Airo syncs your site’s name, address and phone to your Facebook Business Page automatically[14].
  • Service-area and location pages: the older builder caps a site at 50 pages[39]. Airo publishes no page cap, and neither builder documents a multi-location feature[39][1].

How many AI-recommended contractors use GoDaddy Website Builder?

In BaaDigi’s September 2026 study of 511 contractor websites named by ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews, 2.9% ran on GoDaddy Website Builder (95% confidence interval 1.8–4.8%)[40]. For comparison, WordPress was 49.3%, Duda 6.8%, Wix 6.5% and Squarespace 2.7%[40]. This is correlation only: the study cannot show that GoDaddy helps or hurts a contractor’s chance of being recommended.

Across the web as a whole, W3Techs puts GoDaddy Website Builder on 0.6% of all websites, a 0.9% share of sites whose content system it can identify[41].

What do users complain about?

Across all GoDaddy products, Trustpilot’s summary of recent reviews flags unexpected billing charges and confusing renewal settings, alongside an overall 4.5 TrustScore; that summary is not specific to the website builder[42]. A business.com review of Airo ran out of AI credits during its first test project and had to wait a month for them to reset, and found the AI-written copy generic[43]. Airo users on Reddit describe edits burning through credits quickly[44].

What changed at GoDaddy in 2025–2026?

  • November 13, 2025: GoDaddy launched Airo.ai in beta, including a website builder agent[45].
  • End of Q1 2026: Airo AI Builder launched commercially, per GoDaddy’s CFO[2]. The Professional and Ultimate tiers went live in March[46].
  • February 16, 2026: the Website Services Agreement covering the older builder was last revised[4].
  • April 7, 2026: the Cloudflare AI Crawl Control partnership was announced[7].
  • May 2026: Airo sites began rendering on the server, with automatic sitemap and robots.txt[23].
  • June–August 2026: prompt-based SEO optimization, bookings that take payment, and Facebook contact sync[30][36][14].
  • September 2026: automations that consume AI credits, and existing customers moving to Airo at renewal[11][2].

Should a contractor use GoDaddy Website Builder?

  • Reasonable fit: a new one-truck or small-crew business that needs a basic site with booking and a contact form this week, on a paid Airo plan and its own domain, and is willing to rewrite the AI copy.
  • Think twice: a contractor with an established site and rankings. With no documented page-by-page 301 redirects, moving old URLs onto GoDaddy risks losing them.
  • Plan your exit: if you are on the older Websites + Marketing builder, the website belongs to GoDaddy under its terms. If you move to Airo, download your code regularly.
  • Either way: confirm the renewal price, whether AI Crawl Control applies to your plan, and that the domain is registered in your name.
