Is Webflow Good for a Contractor Website?

By Ryan Goering, CEO, BaaDigi · Last updated September 2026 · 32 sources checked

Webflow is a strong choice for a contractor who has a designer and wants full control over SEO and AI crawlers, but it has a steeper learning curve than a drag-and-drop builder[1]. Webflow pricing starts at $15 a month billed yearly for the Basic site plan, which has no CMS; a site with a blog or city pages needs Premium at $25 a month yearly or $39 monthly[2][3]. It gives you real control over AI search: AI bots are allowed by default, you can write your own robots.txt rules, and llms.txt has been native since July 2025[4][5][6]. Speed is good, with 71.2% of Webflow sites passing Core Web Vitals on mobile and 82.1% on desktop[7]. The warning: exporting your code needs a paid Workspace plan on top, and the export leaves out your CMS content and working forms[8].

BaaDigi builds websites, mostly on Next.js, so we compete with every platform on this page. Every figure below is from the platform’s own pages or public datasets, so you can check it.

What does Webflow cost for a contractor?

Webflow sells two separate things. A Site plan pays for hosting, a custom domain connection and the CMS for one site; a Workspace plan pays for staging, seats and code export across your account. Every account gets a free Starter Workspace, so a contractor publishing one site needs only a paid Site plan[2].

  • Domain: no free domain. Webflow is not a registrar; its "buy new domain" flow sends you to IONOS, and Webflow publishes no domain price[9].
  • Email: the pricing page lists no email hosting in any plan, so business email (Google Workspace or Microsoft 365) is bought elsewhere[2].
  • Transaction fees: none on regular Site plans. The Ecommerce Standard plan charges 2%[2].
  • Add-ons: an extra full seat is $39 a month billed yearly, built-in analytics start at $9 a month, and 50 GB of extra bandwidth on Premium is $20 a month billed yearly[2].

Webflow’s terms let it change fees at any time, including at renewal, with notice[10]. Annual plans are "billed up front for one (1) year subscription periods and [are] non-refundable"[10].

The free Starter site is not a lead site. It only publishes to a webflow.io address, and its 50 form submissions never reset[11]. Budget for at least Basic, and Premium if you want a blog or location pages.

Do you own your Webflow site if you leave?

You keep ownership of your website content under Webflow’s terms[10]. Getting it out in working order is the hard part.

  • Code export needs a paid Workspace plan. "Code export is only available on Workspace plans — that is, Site plans do not include the ability to export your site’s code"[8]. Core, the cheapest, is $19 a month billed yearly[2].
  • CMS content is not in the code export. Blog posts and CMS-driven city or service pages come out as empty templates[8]. You can export each CMS Collection separately as a CSV file[12].
  • Forms and site search stop working on an exported site[8].
  • Export is one-way: exported code cannot be imported back into Webflow[2].

Your domain stays yours. Webflow does not sell or hold domains, so your domain sits at your own registrar and moving off Webflow is a DNS change there, not a transfer out of Webflow[13].

If a designer builds your site, make sure it lives in a Workspace you own and pay for. Webflow’s terms say it may decide ownership disputes between parties such as a web designer and a client[10]. Settle ownership in writing before the build.

Can AI search engines read a Webflow site?

Yes, and you get bot-level control. In Webflow’s words: "Traffic from search engine crawlers and AI bots is allowed by default."[4].

  • Traffic control toggles in Site settings > SEO > Indexing write robots.txt rules for a group of known AI bots, including GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, ChatGPT-User, CCBot and Bytespider, separately from search engine crawlers[4].
  • A full robots.txt editor lets you write rules for any user-agent, for example allowing every bot but one[5]. It needs a paid Site plan or paid Workspace[5].
  • Webflow sites can also send a Content-Signal header that tells AI crawlers how your content may be used[5].
  • llms.txt is native: upload a UTF-8 file under 100 KB in SEO settings and Webflow serves it at the root of your custom domain[14]. Webflow itself says it does not guarantee your site will be read by AI models[14].
  • Premium adds hosting for files at /.well-known/, used for domain verification and some newer integrations[2].

Webflow warns that blocking crawlers may reduce visibility in both traditional and AI-powered search[4]. Webflow hosting sits behind Cloudflare, and Webflow reported that AI and LLM crawler traffic to its hosted sites grew more than 125% in the first half of 2025[15].

Webflow’s AEO agents, which suggest and write AI-search fixes into your pages, need the Team plan at $2,500 a month or Enterprise[16]. For a typical contractor, the robots.txt and llms.txt controls included with Basic or Premium are the part that matters.

How many AI-recommended contractors use Webflow?

Very few. In BaaDigi’s study of 511 local contractors named by ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews, 2.2% ran Webflow (95% confidence interval 1.2–3.8%)[17]. For comparison, WordPress ran 49.3%, Duda 6.8%, Wix 6.5%, GoDaddy Website Builder 2.9%, Squarespace 2.7% and Hibu 2.5%[17].

Across the whole web, W3Techs counts Webflow on 0.8% of all websites, a 1.2% share of sites whose content management system it can identify[18].

Correlation only. The study counts which platforms recommended contractors use; it cannot show that any platform helps or hurts your chances of being recommended.

How fast are Webflow sites?

Well above the web average, especially on desktop. In the HTTP Archive Core Web Vitals Technology Report for August 2026, 71.2% of Webflow sites passed all three Core Web Vitals on mobile and 82.1% on desktop[7]. The web-wide pass rates that month were 53.0% on mobile and 60.2% on desktop[19].

Mobile has been climbing, from 68.1% in June to 71.2% in August. The weak spot is responsiveness on phones: 88.6% of Webflow sites had a good Interaction to Next Paint score on mobile in August, against 99.3% on desktop[7]. These are site-level averages from real Chrome users, and a heavy design with lots of animation can still be slow.

The HTTP Archive’s own analysts note that platforms which control hosting and code tend to deliver more consistent results, especially on mobile, than self-hosted systems whose speed depends on themes and plugins[20].

What SEO controls does Webflow give you?

  • Titles and meta descriptions: custom on every page, including CMS templates[2].
  • Canonical tags: a global canonical URL setting plus page-level canonicals[21].
  • 301 redirects: a built-in redirect manager with wildcard support, on a paid Site plan or paid Workspace. There is no hard limit, but Webflow recommends 1,000 rules at most[22].
  • Sitemap: generated automatically, with indexing toggles per page and per CMS item[2].
  • Schema: a dedicated schema markup field on each page and CMS template, written by hand or generated by Webflow AI, on paid plans[23].
  • Custom code: site-wide and per-page code on paid Site plans[2].

Does Webflow have the local business features contractors need?

  • Location and service pages: this is Webflow’s strength. A CMS Collection generates one page per item from a single template, and Premium allows 20,000 items[2]. Basic has no CMS, so this needs Premium[2].
  • LocalBusiness schema: not automatic. You add it in the schema markup field, and on CMS templates you can bind fields such as name and address so each location page gets its own[23].
  • Click-to-call: a phone link type on any button or link, plus a CMS phone field for per-location numbers[24].
  • Forms: native forms with unlimited submissions on any paid Site plan, and CSV export of submissions[11].
  • Booking: no native scheduler. You embed a tool such as Calendly with a code embed element[25].
  • Reviews: we found no native review display or Google reviews widget, so reviews come from a third-party embed.

Webflow forms send notification emails and store submissions, but connecting them to your CRM or call tracking is a separate setup. Test that every form lands in your CRM before you run ads to the site.

What changed at Webflow in 2025–2026?

  • May 5, 2025: Webflow Cloud announced, for hosting Next.js and Astro apps alongside Webflow sites[26].
  • July 23, 2025: native llms.txt upload launched[6].
  • May 2026: the CMS and Business plans merged into Premium, Basic rose to $15 yearly or $25 monthly, and the $2,500-a-month Team plan was added[3]. A third-party guide dates the new pricing for new purchases to May 13, 2026[27].
  • Former Business-plan customers moved to Premium lose half their included bandwidth, from 100 GB to 50 GB[3].
  • June 29, 2026: the new prices began applying to existing sites at their next renewal; sites in Freelancer or Agency Workspaces and pre-2022 legacy discounts follow on November 16, 2026[28].
  • September 2, 2026: at Webflow Conf the company announced AEO content agents, an AI landing page and ads product in beta, and a research preview of an agent platform called Source[29].

What do Webflow users complain about?

The loudest complaint in 2026 is price. Basic’s monthly price went from $19 to $25, about 32%, and Reddit threads on the change drew wide criticism[30][3]. On Trustpilot, where Webflow scores 1.5 from only 51 reviews, reviewers describe being moved onto a pricier merged plan and annual renewals charged with no refund[31]. G2 reviewers most often mention a steep learning curve for newcomers[1], and Capterra reviewers describe confusion over seats billed separately from plans[32]. These are self-selected samples, so read them as risks to check, not a score.

Should a contractor use Webflow?

  • Likely a fit: a contractor with a designer or agency who wants many city and service pages from one template, custom schema per location, and direct control over robots.txt and llms.txt. Budget Premium at $25 a month billed yearly.
  • Likely not: an owner who plans to build and edit the site alone with no design experience. The learning curve is the top complaint, and simpler builders cost about the same.
  • Think twice if you want to be able to leave with a working site. Code export costs a paid Workspace plan, and your CMS pages and forms do not come with it.
  • Either way: keep the site in a Workspace you own, put your domain at a registrar you control, and plan to add booking and reviews with third-party tools.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Webflow cost for a contractor website?
A contractor site on Webflow costs $15 a month billed yearly on Basic, or $25 a month on Premium if you need a blog or location pages; billed monthly, those are $25 and $39. The domain is bought separately, and Webflow does not include business email.
Can I export my Webflow site?
You can export the HTML, CSS and JavaScript only with a paid Workspace plan, starting at $19 a month billed yearly. The export leaves out CMS content such as blog posts and location pages, forms and site search stop working, and exported code cannot be imported back. CMS Collections can be downloaded separately as CSV files.
Does Webflow block ChatGPT and other AI crawlers?
No, not by default. Webflow allows search engine crawlers and AI bots unless you change it. You can switch AI bots off as a group or write your own robots.txt rules for any bot on a paid plan.
Does Webflow support llms.txt?
Yes. Since July 2025 you can upload an llms.txt file under 100 KB in the SEO settings, and Webflow serves it at the root of your custom domain. Webflow notes it does not guarantee AI models will read it.
Is Webflow faster than other website builders?
Faster than most websites. In August 2026, 71.2% of Webflow sites passed Google’s Core Web Vitals on mobile and 82.1% on desktop, compared with 53.0% and 60.2% across all websites.
Does Webflow have online booking for contractors?
No. Webflow has no built-in scheduler, so contractors embed a booking tool such as Calendly on the page.
