The WordPress alternatives we researched are Wix (fast, but the site cannot leave Wix), Squarespace (simple, but exports only part of the site), Webflow (designer-grade control, code export costs extra), GoDaddy’s Airo builder (cheapest start: $9.99 a month for the first year, auto-renewing at $179.88; labeled Beta), Duda (highest Core Web Vitals pass rate, usually run by an agency) and BaaDigi’s managed Next.js plan (you own the code)[1][2][3][4][5][6]. All of them are hosted for you, so there are no WordPress plugins to patch; that matters because 91% of new WordPress security flaws found in 2025 were in plugins[7]. All five builders also pass Core Web Vitals more often than WordPress: 71–86% of their sites pass on mobile, against 48.7% of WordPress sites[8][5][9]. The trade-off is ownership. Self-hosted WordPress lets you move every file to any host[10]; Wix sites cannot leave Wix’s servers, older GoDaddy sites may not be moved to another host, and the other builders export only part of the site[1][11][2][12]. Before you switch, check what you can take with you.
BaaDigi builds websites, mostly on Next.js, so we compete with every platform on this page. Every figure below is from the platform’s own pages or public datasets, so you can check it.
Why do people leave WordPress?
WordPress runs 40.2% of all websites, so most people looking for an alternative are already on it[13]. These are the reasons that show up in the public record.
- Upkeep never stops. WordPress shipped 7.0.2, 7.0.3, 7.0.4 and 7.0.5 between July 17 and September 17, 2026[14]. The 7.0.2 flaw was serious enough that WordPress.org forced the update onto affected sites[15].
- Plugins are the security risk. Patchstack counted 11,334 new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025, up 42% on 2024; 91% were in plugins and only six in WordPress core[7].
- Speed. In August 2026, 48.7% of WordPress sites passed all Core Web Vitals on mobile and 53.3% on desktop, below the whole-web rates of 53.0% and 60.2%[9][16].
- Cost is hard to pin down. The software is free, but you buy your own hosting and domain, and WordPress.org publishes no hosting price[17][18]. Premium plugins add up; Yoast SEO Premium alone is $118.80 a year before VAT[19].
- WordPress.com renewal prices are hard to see. Its pricing page lists Business at $25 a month on 12-month billing and says plans auto-renew, but the page text we read shows no renewal price, so ask for it before you buy[20].
- AI licensing on WordPress.com. Unless you tick "Prevent third-party sharing", your site stays in Automattic’s third-party content licensing[21].
- Governance noise. TechCrunch reported on February 12, 2026 on the ongoing WP Engine v. Automattic legal fight; we did not re-check its current status[22].
There is also a case for staying. Self-hosted WordPress is GPL-licensed software[10], and it ran 49.3% of the 511 contractor websites AI engines recommended in our study, far more than any other platform[23]. That is correlation only: WordPress is common everywhere, and the study cannot show that any platform helps or hurts your chance of being recommended.
If the real problem is that nobody updates your plugins, a new platform is one fix; a maintenance plan on your current WordPress site is another. Price both before you rebuild.
What are the best WordPress alternatives?
These are the six options we researched for this series, not every option on the market. Prices are US list prices as published between September 21 and October 1, 2026, for the website plan only; domains, email and booking tools can cost extra.
| Alternative | First-year cost | Renewal cost | Can you export or own the site? | Who edits it, and how | Core Web Vitals pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wix | US prices: Light $17, Core $29 and Business $39 a month, each on a 12-month term paid in full at purchase; bookings and payments start on Core. Wix prices vary by country[24] | Anything bought at a discount renews at the standard rate; yearly plans are charged up to three weeks before they expire[25] | No. The site must run on Wix’s servers, and blog posts cannot be exported[1][26] | You, in the Wix editor or the Wix Harmony AI builder, included in every plan; 2 to 10 collaborators from Light to Business[27][24] | 81.2% / 86.8%[28] |
| Squarespace | $19–$99 a month billed yearly, or $25–$139 month to month[29] | Price increases apply at your next renewal; PetaPixel reported annual price increases of up to 26% in July 2026[30][31] | Partly. One WordPress-format file without your design or most page types[2] | You, in the Squarespace editor; up to 2 contributors on Basic, unlimited from Core[29] | 72.1% / 66.4%[32] |
| Webflow | $15 a month billed yearly for Basic (no CMS); $25 for Premium, which a blog or city pages need[33] | Webflow may change fees, including at renewal, with notice; annual plans are non-refundable[34] | Code only, and only with a paid Workspace plan from $19 a month; CMS content and working forms are left out[3][33] | Usually a designer, in Webflow’s visual designer; an extra full seat is $39 a month billed yearly[33] | 71.2% / 82.1%[8] |
| GoDaddy (Airo AI Builder) | Starter: $9.99 a month for the first 1-year term, which is $119.88 over the term (our calculation from the published monthly price). Higher plans: Professional $24.99 a month, Ultimate $99.99 a month. The builder is labeled Beta[4] | Starter: “Auto-renews at $179.88” (Professional $443.88, Ultimate $1,799.88). The page does not say what period that amount covers[4] | Airo: yes, you can download the project as a zip of its files and code. Older Websites + Marketing sites may not be moved to another host[35][11] | You, by prompting Airo’s AI, metered in AI credits; manual text and image edits use no credits[36] | 83.8% / 80.5% (all GoDaddy Website Builder sites)[37] |
| Duda | Duda sells agency platform plans, not single-site plans: $19 to $149 a month per account billed annually (Basic to White Label), and each extra published site is $17 to $19 a month; what an agency charges you is not public[38] | Renews automatically; Duda may change prices with notice of any increase[39] | Only on Agency plans and up; the blog exports as RSS only, and dynamic pages and working forms are left out[12] | Mostly the agency that built it, since Duda sells to agencies; Team plans and up include client accounts[40][38] | 86.0% / 87.5%[5] |
| BaaDigi AI Website Management (our own offer) | $1,464: $97 a month plus a one-time $300 setup[6] | $1,164 a year, month to month, no contract[6] | Yes. You own the domain, code, content and lead data[6] | You, with your own Claude or ChatGPT subscription; each change is previewed, checked and approved by you before it publishes[6] | Not measured for this plan |
For comparison, self-hosted WordPress is free software on hosting you choose, with every file yours to move, and 48.7% of its sites pass Core Web Vitals on mobile[17][10][9]. The GoDaddy speed figure covers all GoDaddy Website Builder sites; the report does not separate Airo sites from older ones.
Budget at the renewal price, not the first-year price. GoDaddy’s Airo page shows Starter at $9.99 a month for the first year and “Auto-renews at $179.88”[4], PetaPixel reported Squarespace annual price increases of up to 26% in July 2026, and Wix bills yearly plans weeks before they expire[31][25].
What do you lose and keep when you move off WordPress?
You keep your content and your domain. You lose your theme, your plugins and anything they did for you.
- Content exports as one file. Tools > Export creates an XML file of posts, pages, custom post types, comments, custom fields, categories, tags, custom taxonomies and users[41].
- Themes and plugins do not. They are not in that export list[41], so the design gets rebuilt on the new platform, and every plugin feature (forms, booking, SEO fields, schema) needs a replacement there.
- On WordPress.com, the export includes posts, pages and comments but "will not include your theme design, customizations, or plugins"[42].
- A domain registered elsewhere moves with you; you point it at the new platform. Ask your host whether yours is registered with them, since WordPress.com plans include a free domain for one year.
Redirects decide whether you keep your search rankings. Every old URL that changes needs a 301 redirect to its new address. What each alternative documents:
- Wix: a URL Redirect Manager, up to 5,000 redirects per site; you cannot set up a 301 redirect from free Wix URLs to a Premium site[43].
- Squarespace: the URL Mappings panel, about 2,500 redirect lines; a 301 fires only once the old URL no longer exists[44].
- Webflow: a built-in redirect manager with wildcards; no hard limit, but Webflow recommends 1,000 rules at most[45].
- GoDaddy: no page-by-page redirect tool in GoDaddy’s US help for either builder; domain forwarding moves a whole domain, not single pages[46].
- Duda: built-in 301 redirects, with CSV import of up to 200 redirects per file[47].
Bulk content needs a route in, too. Each builder’s own help pages document what comes across, and the limits matter:
- Wix: imports published posts from a WordPress.com or WordPress.org blog, by site URL or an XML file, up to 5,000 posts at a time. Text, images, videos, original dates, alt text and categories come across; contact forms, author names, tags, custom plugins, inserted code, PDFs and comments do not. Drafts and scheduled posts are copied by hand, and Wix does not create 301 redirects for you. It is a blog import, not a whole-site import[48].
- Squarespace: a one-time import of a WordPress .xml export (WordPress 3.2 or higher); it does not keep syncing new content. Squarespace advises disabling WordPress plugins first[49].
- Duda: imports blog posts from an RSS feed, up to 300 per import and 1,500 posts in total; posts arrive as drafts. Duda’s help page does not name WordPress, and it covers the blog only[50].
- Webflow: imports CMS Collection content from a CSV file, which suits city or service pages; we found no WordPress importer[51].
- GoDaddy: we found no WordPress importer for Websites + Marketing or Airo. Airo can rebuild a site from your existing content and branding, but the result is a fresh design rather than an exact copy, and payments, online store and integrations are not carried over[52].
Whole pages, forms and plugin features still need to be rebuilt by hand or by someone you pay.
Think about the next move as well as this one. Of the options here, self-hosted WordPress is the one where you can take every file with you. A Wix site cannot leave Wix’s servers, and Squarespace, Webflow and Duda exports each leave out major parts of the site[1][2][3][12].
Can you edit the site yourself with AI on each alternative?
Every platform now sells some AI, but it does different jobs. Here is what each one documents.
- WordPress itself: you may not need to leave. WordPress.com lets you turn on access for outside AI agents such as ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor to read and edit your site (an MCP setting you enable)[53], and WordPress 7.0 added an AI Client to core that connects WordPress to generative AI models[54].
- Wix: Wix Harmony, launched January 2026, is Wix’s AI website builder[55], and it is included in every plan, including the free one[27]. Every Wix site also has a built-in MCP server that outside AI agents can connect to for business details, services and booking[56]; that documentation says it acts as an anonymous site visitor and sees only what a regular visitor can[56]. Wix separately documents a developer MCP that lets AI clients such as Claude or Cursor search Wix’s documentation, write code and make API calls on your Wix sites with your Wix account login, and its tool list includes account-level actions such as creating, updating or publishing a site[57]; we did not check what it can change on a page.
- Squarespace: plans include AI credits, 10 one-time on Basic and 20, 40 or 120 a month on Core, Plus and Advanced; the pricing page says credits cover all Squarespace AI features, and the one we found documented for AI search is the AI Visibility tool, which checks how often ChatGPT or Gemini mention your site[29][58]. Editing your site from an outside AI tool is not documented in the pages we read.
- Webflow: Webflow AI can write schema markup for a page[59], and extra AI credits are $20 a month billed yearly for 2,000 credits[33]. Webflow’s pricing page lists AEO agents under the Team plan ($2,500 a month, annual contract required) and Enterprise[33][60].
- GoDaddy Airo: the whole builder works by plain-English prompts[61]. You can ask it to "optimize my site for SEO"[62]. Prompts spend AI credits; manual text and image edits do not, and extra credits are $24.99 for 250[36]. Automations also use credits each time they run[63].
- Duda: its pricing page says its AI can generate image alt text and perform SEO and AEO changes agentically, and its Copilot runs on monthly AI credits[38]. In July 2026 Duda added Duda Vibe, a plain-English editor aimed at agencies[64]. On Duda, the agency usually decides how much of this you get to use.
BaaDigi’s plan takes a different approach. BaaDigi rebuilds your current site on Next.js (up to 15 standard pages), hosts it on Vercel with Cloudflare in front, filters form spam, delivers and logs your leads, installs analytics and gives technical support[6]. You make your own changes with your own Claude or ChatGPT subscription. Content is kept separate from code, and the AI may change content only. Each change is previewed, checked automatically and approved by you before it publishes, and every change can be rolled back[6].
BaaDigi’s plan does not include done-for-you content changes; you make them yourself with AI. E-commerce, membership sites, web apps, portals and large migrations are quoted separately[6].
Which WordPress alternative fits you?
- Wix. Likely a fit if you want a fast site you can run yourself this month, plan to stay on Wix for good, and want bookings or payments from the $29 Core plan. Not a fit if you might move again: a Wix site cannot be exported[24][1].
- Squarespace. Likely a fit if you run one business from one location with a modest number of pages and want a clean design with little upkeep. Choose Core or higher if you want the mobile call bar and Zapier[29][65].
- Webflow. Likely a fit if a designer builds and maintains the site and you want full control over robots.txt, schema and redirects. Budget for Premium if you have a blog or location pages[33][66].
- GoDaddy Airo. Likely a fit if you want the cheapest start and are happy building by prompts. Plan for the auto-renew amount ($179.88 on Starter), and remember the builder is labeled Beta[4].
- Duda. Likely a fit if you already trust an agency that builds on it and have the exit terms in writing. Duda support will not move a site for you; the agency holding the account has to start a transfer[67].
- BaaDigi AI Website Management (our own offer). Likely a fit if you want a managed site you own outright and are comfortable making your own changes with Claude or ChatGPT[6].
- Stay on WordPress. Likely a fit if you have a developer or host who keeps plugins updated, or you need features only plugins provide. Test your site in Google PageSpeed Insights before deciding speed is the reason to leave.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best alternative to WordPress for a small business?
- It depends on what you want to own and who will edit the site. Wix and Squarespace are the simplest to run yourself but are hard to leave. Webflow suits a site a designer builds. GoDaddy Airo is the cheapest start ($9.99 a month for year one, auto-renewing at $179.88) but is labeled Beta. Duda is usually run by an agency. BaaDigi’s managed Next.js plan gives you the code and lets you edit with your own Claude or ChatGPT.
- Is there a WordPress alternative where I still own my website?
- Of the platforms we researched, GoDaddy’s Airo builder lets you download a project as a zip of its files and code, and BaaDigi’s AI Website Management plan says you own the domain, code, content and data. Webflow and Duda export code only with a paid Workspace or Agency-level plan, and leave out CMS content, dynamic pages and working forms from the code export (Webflow exports CMS items as CSV; Duda exports the blog as RSS). Wix sites cannot be exported, and Squarespace exports only part of a site.
- Are website builders faster than WordPress?
- On average, yes. In August 2026, between 71.2% and 86.0% of sites on Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, GoDaddy and Duda passed all Core Web Vitals on mobile, against 48.7% of WordPress sites and 53.0% across the web. An individual WordPress site on good hosting with few plugins can still be fast.
- Will I lose my Google rankings if I switch from WordPress?
- You can keep most of them if every changed URL gets a 301 redirect to its new address. Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and Duda have built-in redirect tools. in the pages we read, GoDaddy’s help documents no page-by-page redirect tool, which matters if your old site has pages that rank.
- Can I take my WordPress content with me?
- Yes. WordPress exports posts, pages, comments, categories, tags, custom fields and users as an XML file. Your theme and plugins do not come with it, so the design is rebuilt and each plugin feature needs a replacement on the new platform.
