What Is Zero-Click Search, and What Does It Mean for Your Business?

Last updated: August 2026

Zero-click search is a search that ends without the person visiting any website. The answer appears on the results page itself — in an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box or a knowledge panel — or the searcher reads what they need and leaves. Research from SparkToro using Similarweb clickstream data found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. For any business that measures marketing by website visits, that is the single most important number in search right now, because it means the majority of the demand you generate never shows up in your traffic report.

Free Agentic Browsing Audit

Can an AI agent actually use your website?

AI agents are starting to visit sites on a customer's behalf — comparing companies and requesting quotes. We run the same agentic browsing checks Google built into Chrome and show you what an agent hits when it lands on your site. No email to run it.

What counts as zero-click?

More than people assume, and this is where the conversation usually goes wrong.

  • AI Overviews — the generated summary above the results
  • Featured snippets — the answer box, which has existed for a decade
  • People Also Ask — expandable questions answered inline
  • Knowledge panels — hours, phone number, address shown directly
  • Plain abandonment — the searcher saw enough, or nothing, and left

Zero-click is not a synonym for AI search. Most of that list predates AI Overviews entirely. AI is accelerating a trend that was already well underway. Say "zero-click" when you mean zero-click — if you tell a customer "68% of searches are AI citations now", you have overstated it and anyone who checks will find that out.

That said, AI is clearly pushing it along. AI Overviews appear on roughly a fifth of searches, and where they appear, click-through drops sharply.

What does this look like in real data?

We can show you our own, which is more useful than a study because you can see the mechanism.

Last month baadigi.com recorded 68,764 impressions and 58 clicks. That is a click-through rate of 0.08%. A single page had 57,322 impressions and one click.

We were visible constantly and visited almost never. Judged on traffic, that page is a failure. Judged on whether we were present at the moment people were deciding, it is doing exactly what it should.

What breaks when the click disappears?

Your traffic reports understate your reach

Impressions can climb for months while clicks stay flat. That is not a broken page. It is the same page performing under different rules.

Position stops meaning what it meant

Ranking well on a query with an AI Overview above it produces very few visits. We have watched pages sit at position eight to ten on high-impression queries and generate essentially nothing. Chasing a better position on those terms is effort spent on the wrong lever.

Attribution gets harder

Someone reads about you in an AI answer, thinks about it for a week, then searches your business name directly or just phones you. That shows up as direct or branded traffic. The thing that actually caused it is invisible in your analytics.

So what do you do about it?

Be the source that gets quoted

If the answer is being assembled without your visitor, you want your material inside the answer. In practice that means writing pages that answer a specific question completely and early, in the vocabulary people actually use, so a machine can lift a clean passage without needing the rest of the page.

Write for extraction, not just for reading

Put the direct answer in the first hundred words. Use headings that are real questions. Keep each answer standalone rather than dependent on the three paragraphs above it.

Invest in the sources you do not control

Reviews, your Google Business Profile, directories, local press. When the answer is assembled from multiple corroborating sources, being described consistently in several places matters more than any single page you own. We covered the mechanics in how to get cited by AI.

Change what you measure

Keep watching clicks, but stop treating them as the whole story. Watch impressions. Watch branded and direct traffic. Periodically check whether AI assistants name you for your category. A business that is quoted everywhere and clicked rarely is in a much stronger position than its traffic report suggests.

Is this actually bad news?

It is bad news for anyone whose entire model was renting attention through search traffic. It is neutral, and arguably good, for a service business that mainly needs to be the name that comes up when somebody asks who to call.

You were never really selling clicks. You were selling being the obvious choice at the moment of decision. That moment has moved onto the results page and into AI answers. The job is to be present there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is zero-click search?

Zero-click search is a search that ends without the person clicking through to any website. The answer appears directly on the results page — in an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, a knowledge panel — or the searcher simply leaves without clicking anything.

What percentage of searches are zero-click?

Research from SparkToro using Similarweb clickstream data found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. Other studies report figures between roughly 47% and 68% depending on methodology and date range.

Is zero-click search the same as AI search?

No, and conflating them is a common mistake. Zero-click includes featured snippets, People Also Ask, knowledge panels and plain abandonment — all of which predate AI Overviews. AI is accelerating the trend, not causing all of it.

Does zero-click search mean SEO is dead?

No, but it does change what success looks like. If the click is disappearing, ranking for its own sake is worth less and being the source that gets quoted is worth more. The work shifts from earning visits to earning mentions.

How do you measure success if nobody clicks?

Track impressions alongside clicks, watch for direct and branded traffic rising, and check periodically whether AI assistants name your business for your category. Judged on clicks alone, a page that is quoted constantly looks like a failure.
