Nextdoor vs Facebook for Local Services

Nextdoor vs Facebook for Local Services

Nextdoor vs Facebook for local service businesses: Facebook has far more reach and far better targeting tools; Nextdoor has far better audience fit and cheaper clicks. 77% of Nextdoor users are homeowners and its clicks run $2.50–$3.50. Facebook can reach anyone but you pay to filter out renters, wrong cities and wrong life stages. For most home service businesses the honest answer is both, with different jobs: Nextdoor for neighbourhood-level trust and referral, Facebook for reach, retargeting and visual proof at scale.

Free Agentic Browsing Audit

Can an AI agent actually use your website?

AI agents are starting to visit sites on a customer's behalf — comparing companies and requesting quotes. We run the same agentic browsing checks Google built into Chrome and show you what an agent hits when it lands on your site. No email to run it.

What each is actually for

Nextdoor is a trust channel. Its defining behaviour is a neighbour asking who to call and other neighbours answering. That recommendation is the highest-converting lead any contractor gets, and you cannot buy it directly — you earn it by doing good work in a defined area and being present when your trade comes up. The free profile matters more than the ads.

Facebook is a reach and retargeting channel. Its strength is showing visual proof to a large audience and following people who visited your site. For trades where the before-and-after sells — pressure washing, roofing, remodeling, landscaping — that is genuinely valuable. Organic reach for local business pages, however, is close to worthless now.

The honest cost comparison

Nextdoor's cheaper click is real but not automatically decisive. A cheap click on a platform where you have no recommendations converts badly; an expensive click on Facebook that lands on a strong retargeting sequence may convert better. Judge both on cost per booked job, measured separately, never blended.

Neither is a search channel. Neither captures someone actively looking for you right now — that is Google Business Profile and Local Services Ads or SEO. Social is awareness and referral; treat it as a complement rather than a substitute.

What we would run

  1. Nextdoor free profile first. Claim it, complete it, ask happy customers to recommend you, respond helpfully when your trade comes up. Costs nothing. See is Nextdoor worth it.
  2. Facebook for visual proof and retargeting. Before-and-afters, and a retargeting audience from site visitors.
  3. Small Nextdoor test — $100–$300/month across neighbourhoods you genuinely serve.
  4. Measure separately. Blended social reporting hides which one works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nextdoor or Facebook better for local service businesses?▼

They do different jobs. Nextdoor offers better audience fit — 77% of users are homeowners — and cheaper clicks at $2.50 to $3.50, making it a trust and referral channel. Facebook offers far greater reach, sophisticated targeting and strong retargeting. Most home service businesses benefit from both, measured separately.

Is Nextdoor cheaper than Facebook advertising?▼

On cost per click, generally yes. But a cheap click on a platform where you have no recommendations converts poorly, while a more expensive Facebook click landing on a good retargeting sequence may convert better. Judge both on cost per booked job rather than click price, and never blend the reporting.

Can social media replace Google for local service leads?▼

No. Neither Nextdoor nor Facebook captures active search intent — someone looking for your service right now goes to Google. Social platforms build awareness and referral, which is valuable and cheaper, but they complement Google Business Profile and Local Services Ads rather than substituting for them.

Does organic Facebook still work for local businesses?▼

Organic reach for local business pages is close to negligible now. Facebook's value for contractors is paid: showing visual before-and-after proof to a large audience and retargeting people who already visited your website. Nextdoor is the platform where organic effort still returns meaningfully, through recommendations.
