Yelp vs Google Business Profile

Yelp vs Google Business Profile for home services: this is not a close comparison for most businesses. Google Business Profile is free, works in every market, and drives the map pack — where the majority of local service calls originate. Yelp matters in a handful of dense metros (San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago) and thinly almost everywhere else. If you can only maintain one, maintain Google Business Profile. Claim Yelp for free as an entity signal, but do not treat the two as equivalent, and do not spend on Yelp advertising before Google is fully worked.

Can an AI agent actually use your website?
AI agents are starting to visit sites on a customer's behalf — comparing companies and requesting quotes. We run the same agentic browsing checks Google built into Chrome and show you what an agent hits when it lands on your site. No email to run it.
Side by side
| Google Business Profile | Yelp | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Free profile; ads $5–$25/click, $30–$150/lead |
| Where it appears | Google Search, Maps, the map pack | Yelp app and site; some Google results |
| Market coverage | Everywhere | Strong in a few dense metros, thin elsewhere |
| Drives | Calls, directions, booking | Profile views, calls in Yelp-heavy markets |
| Review portability | Reviews stay on your profile | Reviews subject to Yelp's recommendation filter |
| Sales pressure | None | Widely reported as persistent |
| AI visibility | Strong entity signal | Secondary entity signal |
Why Google Business Profile wins on structure, not preference
The map pack — the three local results with a map above the organic listings — is where most "plumber near me" style searches resolve. Google Business Profile is the only thing that puts you there. It is free, and no competitor can outspend you into it; ranking is driven by proximity, relevance and prominence, with reviews and activity feeding prominence.
That combination is unusual: a free channel where effort, not budget, is the constraint. It is the highest-return work available to most local service businesses, and it is routinely neglected in favour of paid channels that cost money and produce less.

Yelp's real, narrower role
- Entity and citation signal. A complete, consistent Yelp listing reinforces your name, address and phone across the web, which supports local rankings generally and can surface in AI answers.
- Dense-metro discovery. In the four markets above, homeowners genuinely browse Yelp. There, it is a real discovery channel rather than a directory entry.
- Review depth for certain buyers. Some homeowners read Yelp reviews specifically, even when they found you elsewhere.
The one structural caution: Yelp's recommendation software hides reviews it does not trust, including legitimate ones. Reviews you earn may not display. Google does not filter in the same way, which makes review effort there more reliably compounding.
What to do, in order
- Claim and complete Google Business Profile. Categories, services, service area, hours, real photos of real jobs.
- Build reviews there first. They feed map-pack prominence and close rate simultaneously. Under 20 reviews, this is the highest-return task you have.
- Post and keep it current. Activity is a prominence signal and most competitors do not bother.
- Claim Yelp for free and make the details match exactly. Ten minutes, then leave it.
- Only then consider Yelp advertising, and only if you are in a dense Yelp market. See are Yelp Ads worth it.
The mistake to avoid
Paying for Yelp advertising while your Google Business Profile is incomplete, has few reviews, and has not been posted to in months. That is spending money on the weaker channel while ignoring the free stronger one — and it is the most common local-marketing error we see.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Yelp or Google Business Profile better for home services?▼
Google Business Profile, for most businesses and by a wide margin. It is free, works in every market, and drives the map pack where the majority of local service calls originate. Yelp is a meaningful discovery channel mainly in dense metros such as San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, and a secondary entity signal elsewhere.
Should I claim a Yelp listing if I do not advertise there?▼
Yes. A complete, consistent free Yelp listing reinforces your name, address and phone across the web, supports local rankings generally, and can surface in AI-generated answers. It takes about ten minutes. That is entirely separate from paid Yelp advertising, which is a market-dependent decision.
Why do my Yelp reviews not show up?▼
Yelp runs recommendation software that hides reviews it does not trust, including legitimate ones. Reviews you earn may never display publicly. Google does not filter in the same way, which is one reason review-building effort on Google Business Profile compounds more reliably than the same effort on Yelp.
What is the map pack and why does it matter?▼
The map pack is the group of three local business results shown with a map above the organic listings. Most near-me style local searches resolve there, and Google Business Profile is the only thing that puts you in it. Ranking is driven by proximity, relevance and prominence, so effort rather than budget is the constraint.
Should I run Yelp ads or improve my Google Business Profile first?▼
Improve Google Business Profile first, every time. Paying for Yelp advertising while your GBP is incomplete, thin on reviews and not posted to in months means funding the weaker channel while neglecting the free stronger one. Complete the profile, build past 20 reviews, then reconsider paid channels.
